Learner Profile

The Learner Profile is one of the main working tools in the EMERGE Toolbox. It helps you develop a structured understanding of the people your course is intended for before making decisions about course design.

The Learner Profile encourages you to explore five key dimensions:

  • Target learner group – Who are your learners? What are their competence needs? What insights have you gained from learners and stakeholders?
  • Barriers and challenges – What might prevent participation or successful completion? Consider factors such as time, cost, confidence, digital skills or prior learning.
  • Learning preferences – How do your learners prefer to learn? Which learning approaches and formats are most likely to support their success?
  • Motivation and goals – Why would learners choose this course? What problems should it help them solve, and what do they hope to achieve?
  • Support and facilitation needs – What kinds of support, guidance or learning environment will help learners participate and succeed?

The Learner Profile forms the first part of the Course Design Canvas. The insights you gather here will provide the foundation for the Course Blueprint, where learner needs are translated into learning outcomes, course structure and learning activities in the next step of the toolbox.
